RCC Counselors seeks to raise awareness about suicide prevention

September is Suicide Prevention Month and this week, and all month long, counselors at Robeson Community College will be working to raise awareness about Suicide Prevention.

“Each week, Counseling & Career Services will send out information about Suicide Prevention,” Samantha Oxendine, the director of Counseling & Career Services at RCC, wrote in an email to faculty, staff, and students. “Yes, this is a hard topic to discuss and often times, it is easier to ignore…….BUT, suicide is real, and having resources and recognizing signs could save a life or yours!”

This past week RCC’s Counseling Department joined forces with Eastpointe and Robeson Health Care Corporation to provide valuable resources on Suicide Prevention to students, faculty, and staff.

Purple and teal ribbons, the signature symbol for suicide awareness, were distributed throughout the campus on Wednesday. In addition, everyone was asked to wear purple and teal.

One program that showed tremendous support towards the initiative were students in the Basic Law Enforcement Training program.

“It was so awesome for BLET to show their support,” Oxendine said.

One of the resources sent out by Oxendine was the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.

“The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline provides free, confidential, 24/7 support by phone [call or text 988 from anywhere in the U.S.] and online chat is also available,” Oxedine wrote.  “Remember… You Matter.”
