Highlights from RCC’s 3rd Annual Homecoming Week 2024
The 3rd Annual Homecoming Week at Robeson Community College has come and gone, but the memories made will last a lifetime. The theme for the 2024 Homecoming Week was ‘Get in the Game: Educate, Elevate, Dominate’ which was a nod to victory for student success and engagement.
Headlining the week were two major events, the Annual SGA Drive-Thru Trick or Treat “Boo Bash” and the Better Skills, Better Jobs Career Expo. Both events drew large crowds of people to campus. Faculty, staff, and students dressed up in their Halloween gear and put on a great show. It is estimated the “Boo Bash” brought between 2400 to 4000 people to campus and the career expo featured more than 50 employers with several hundred attending, including students and community members.
Employers attending the expo were later celebrated with a special luncheon.
“We are glad everyone took the time to network today to help provide pathways into the workforce for our students,” Executive Vice President Eric Freeman told the employers. “We work hard to prepare our students for the workforce through our degree programs and short-term training.”
“We are taking a holistic approach to helping our students obtain through the Better Skills, Better Jobs Initiative,” stated Vice President Dr. Johnny Smith, who oversees instruction and student support services. “We are working every day to reach the adult learner, and that is why this is important, to help fuel economic development in Robeson County.”
During the career expo, students also had a chance to give a program showcase, highlighting their work and giving an overview of programs available.
They also had a chance to take part in a fun activity, trying their hand at pumpkin painting. First place went to Justin Velasquez for “The Flower,” second place went to “The Donut” by Sara Obaid, and Sonjayah Scott took third place with her pumpkin called “Justin.” Lillian Ingram received an honorable mention for “The Oreo” by the judges.
Students celebrated Halloween with a costume contest, with over a dozen students participating, making it one of the largest costume contests on record. Taking first place was Anatasia Andujar as “Pinhead;” the character “Hattie” took second place portrayed by Julisa Locklear; and Jada Barton won 3rd place as Lorax. Faculty and staff also got into the spirit of Halloween as seen by the photo above on the top of the page shows the nursing faculty dressed as Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.
