This academy consists of three classes which can be taken at the same time or can serve as stand-alone courses. NOTE: The Public Schools of Robeson County no longer requires this training class. Please contact Public Schools of Robeson County for more information on applying for a Substitute Teacher position.
Many school systems require a certain number of hours of training prior to becoming a Substitute Teacher. This is a 36-hour training that provides hands-on activities and role playing to prepare you for teaching children of all ages. Robeson Community College offers day, night and weekend classes to fit your schedule.

A textbook entitled “The First Days of School” by Harry and Rosemary Wong (5th Edition) is required and can be purchased through the RCC Bookstore for $42.00. This course is required for anyone interested in becoming a Notary Public for the first time. It is recommended for all notaries as a refresher course.

NCGS 10B-5(b) provides the following requirements to be commissioned as a Notary Public in NC:
- Be at least 18 years of age or legally emancipated as defined in Article 35 of Chapter 7B of the General Statutes.
- Reside or have a regular place of work or business in this State.
- Reside legally in the United States.
- Speak, read, and write the English language.
- Possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Pass the course of instruction described in this Article, unless the person is a licensed member of the North Carolina State Bar.
- Purchase and keep as a reference the most recent manual approved by the Secretary that describes the duties and authority of notaries public.
- Submit an application containing no significant misstatement or omission of fact.
Students must provide current state or federal picture identification for admission to class. The active-duty military and civilian ID cards DO NOT meet the identification requirements.
NOTE:
Having a conviction for misdemeanor or a felony in this, or any other state, within ten years of your date of application for the position of North Carolina Notary Public could cause denial of your commission application. If convicted of a crime that is a misdemeanor or felony, you must have successfully completed your sentence from the court and then had a ten-year period from successful completion of the sentence prior to applying as a notary public. If you have questions about your criminal history and/or ability to be commissioned as a NC Notary Public please contact the Notary Public Section, the Department of the Secretary of State directly at 919-814-5400 or by email at notary@sosnc.gov before registering for the class. Refunds will not be given if a criminal history issue prevents you from being commissioned or being able to complete the class.

It is strongly recommended that students study the manual prior to class attendance to be better prepared for the state examination given at the end of the class.

Robeson Community College and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (Blue Cross NC) have partnered to offer an insurance career pathway with scholarship opportunities for students.
Three academies will be held each year with the first Insurance Pre-licensing Academy beginning February 6, 2023. The academy offers the pre-licensing education required by the North Carolina Department of Insurance (NCDOI) to become an insurance licensee. Program courses will include Life Insurance, Accident & Health/Sickness Insurance and Medicare Supplement/Long-Term Care/Estate Insurance. Students will be provided with a student kit that includes a laptop and other essential tools to complete the course and successfully begin a career in the insurance field.

Class Dates: Students must enroll and successfully complete both classes listed below for the Insurance Academy. Both classes are hybrid classes and requires specific dates for face-to-face meetings.

INCOME MAINTENANCE CASE WORKER (Department of Social Services)

GAIN SKILLS THAT WILL PREPARE YOU TO WORK AS AN INCOME MAINTENANCE CASE WORKER WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES
This training is a two phase training consisting of 48 hours of training in each phase. Phase I Intro to Human Services and Phase II Income Maintenance Case Worker. Classes must be taken in order.
Phase I Introduction to Human Services – Training consists of
- Entry-level soft skills required for Department of Social Services
- Customer service
- Basic computer and keyboarding skills
- Interview tips and resume skills
- NC FAST terminology and navigation
- National Career Readiness Certificate through WorkKeys training
- 48-hour class which meets Monday and Tuesday nights for three hours
- HRD Fee Waiver available for those meeting eligibility criteria requirements.
Phase II Income Maintenance Case Worker – Training consists of
- More in depth training in NC FAST system
- Updating/changing demographics on individuals/families which can affect eligibility and services received
- This is a second class at a cost of $125 – NO fee waiver available. Outside funding sources may be available.

Fundamentals of Culinary

This course introduces the fundamental concepts, skills and techniques in basic cookery, and moist, dry and combination heat. Emphasis is placed on recipe conversion, measurements, terminology, classical knife cuts, safe food/equipment handling, flavorings/seasonings, stocks/sauces/soups, and related topics. Upon completion, students should be able to exhibit the basic cooking skills used in the foodservice industry.
COURSE STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of the course, students with should be able to do the following:
- Have the knowledge of basic food-service industry history
- Describe and implement the needed steps in preventing food poisoning and food-borne diseases
- Demonstrate recipe conversion
- Exhibit basic cooking skills used in the foodservice industry

Other Materials/Supplies
Students are required to have one pair of non-slip rubber-soled shoes, and hair restraints. Rules of sanitation must be followed; therefore short, clean fingernails are a must with no polish and/or artificial nails. The wearing of jewelry, except a plain wedding band, is also not authorized. Students are encouraged to bring in their own Knife kit that should include but not limited to a Chef knife, boning knife, paring knife, and slicing knife.
