Adult High School, GED information session to be held at RCC’s A.S Thomas Center Feb. 26
Robeson Community College will host an information session for prospective students interested in obtaining their high school diploma through the Adult High School (AHS) or General Education Development (GED) programs. The information session will take place at the A.S. Thomas Center in downtown Pembroke on Wednesday, February 26 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
“We are excited to host this information session at RCC’s A.S. Thomas Center in Pembroke,” stated Patricia Strickland, the director of the center. “The Thomas Center offers us the ability to provide more one-on-one assistance in an environment that may be less intimidating and more personal for students seeking to obtain a high school diploma.”
Anyone who plans to attend the information session is asked to bring a copy of their high school transcripts.
“By having their transcripts in hand, we will be able to provide an assessment of their situation on the spot,” stated James Erick Mitchell, the director of College and Career Readiness programs at RCC. “This will help us in determining what student needs to complete and how soon they can get started towards working on their diploma.”
Studies have shown that the completion of a high school diploma increases the earnings of an individual significantly over a lifetime.
“There is a gap between the earnings of those with a high school diploma compared to those without one,” stated Mitchell. “In today’s economy, on average, a high school graduate earns roughly $42,590 annually, which translates to about $20 per hour, whereas those without any degree on average have earnings which equates to about $29,800.”
“So, it’s clear that those with a high school diploma earn more as it opens up more doors of opportunity for jobs and career paths,” Mitchell said.
Strickland agrees saying, “That’s why we are hosting this information session because it is so important to obtain your high school diploma, and hopefully we will have many come out and learn more about the free programs and resources available at Robeson Community College.”
