About Surgical Technology

A surgical technologist (ST) is an Allied Health Professional who works as part of the sterile team during a surgical procedure. The ST handles all of the surgical supplies and equipment utilized during a surgical procedure. The ST must display a broad knowledge of the varied types of instrumentation, how to assemble the equipment, and pass the items to the surgeon, in a manner in which the equipment will be utilized.

The surgical technologist (ST) must have a broad knowledge of basic anatomy and physiology, sterilization processes and techniques, and understand the varied principles of aeseptic technique, in order to assist in maintaining a sterile environment, before, during and post surgery.
