The Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) is an initiative by Robeson Community College to improve student learning by highlighting an educational fundamental–reading. Entitled RCC 4 R.E.A.L. Reading Engages Active Learning, the primary goal is to improve students’ reading comprehension. Through the development of students’ metacognitive skills (awareness and control of one’s thought processes), students are expected to determine when and where to use reading strategies in order to comprehend, retain, or analyze information and to monitor their own progress and make adjustments in order to engage readings. In accordance with the institution’s mission statement (RCC Catalog, 2010), the QEP will introduce new services that are “directly related to . . . the ability and preparation of students” and changes in assessment methods which monitor students’ progression (2010 RCC Mission Statement). Robeson Community College recognizes the connection between strategic reading and critical thinking. Both affect student learning; the QEP seeks to improve students’ abilities in both.
